Where to use the VIN

Hello averyone, if somebody knows about any website or some place else where i could find out the model of my bike, when bought it i was told was a 1994, but know i get the papers and they say 1989, but since 1991 the savage has 5 gear, nad mine is 5 gear so i don't really know the model of my dear bike. tks in advanced for your help
